This is the Victorian Government’s response to the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability (Disability Royal Commission).
The Victorian Government acknowledges Victorians with disability who advocated for the establishment of the Disability Royal Commission and who generously shared their experiences with the Commission throughout the inquiry. Your voices, and the voices of all people with disability, must remain at the forefront of our work.
The Victorian Government’s response to the report builds on work that is already underway to improve outcomes for Victorians with disability, including through the Inclusive Victoria: state disability plan 2022-2026.
The Disability Royal Commission’s final report was published on 29 September 2023. It followed four and a half years of inquiry and includes 222 recommendations. The final report discusses the violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation experienced by people with disability. It also discusses a vision for a more inclusive Australia in which people with disability live free from harm.
The Victorian Government worked with the Disability Royal Commission throughout its inquiry. It has carefully thought about the Disability Royal Commission’s recommendations.
The Victorian Government has worked with the Australian Government and all state and territory governments to develop a response to the 85 joint recommendations. The joint response was released on 31 July 2024 and is available on the Department of Social Services website. The Victorian Government’s response provides a reply to all 222 recommendations.
